Genesis 1-3
Moved or Unmoved by the Creator???
One of the things that is most amazing to me as I read Genesis 1-2 is how utterly unmoved I am by what I read. Maybe it is because I’ve read it so many times. Maybe because I am naturally inclined to read it from a scientific perspective. Whatever the case, I am certain I remain unmoved because I am not allowing the reality of Genesis 1-2 to affect my hard heart. As I take a quick glance through scripture, believing in God as Creator should do something in me:
Psalm 104 – It leads to worship
Job 38-41 – It leads to humble confession and repentance
Isaiah 40:25-31 – it gives proper perspective to the tired and discouraged
Isaiah 42:5-9 – as creator, he has authority to demand obedience and unequalled worship.
Isaiah 43:1-7 – the power and love displayed in creation is compared to the power and love of our redemption.
Isaiah 54:16-17 – we can take comfort that God even created our enemies. In other words, he is more powerful than they and can either thwart their plans against us or allow them to be carried through. But, we can take comfort that God is sovereign over them.
Isaiah 65:17-18 – the power to create all that is is the same power that will create a new heavens and new earth – in other words, looking at what I can see should prompt me to look to what I can’t see.
2 Corinthians 4:6 – it is a picture of the glorious gospel…and therefore: light should make me think of the light of the gospel and creation should make me think of my new creation.
In other words, Genesis 1-2 should jump start a cold heart. It should move the unmoved. It should give life to the dead. It should speak light into my darkness. It should cause me to stand in awe of the one who says to the waves, “thus far, and no farther.” It should put everything in proper perspective. All of this (and much more) is why the sin of Romans 1:18-25 is the chief of sins. God, let me not fall into the utter ridiculousness of worshiping the created and fail to worship the creator – because even a cold heart worships something, just not the right thing.
